Africa Remembers Her Press: Empowering Young Readers

About

Africa Remembers Her Press is a South African children’s publishing imprint dedicated to advancing African women’s history for children through culturally relevant storytelling. We create and share books that celebrate African history, identity, and leadership while placing African women at the centre of the narrative.

Above all, we intentionally amplify African women’s voices so that young readers see them as visible, valued, and influential shapers of history. By doing so, we help children recognise powerful role models who reflect their heritage and lived realities.

We created the imprint to strengthen children’s literacy development and actively grow South Africa’s reading culture. At the same time, we drive the commercialisation of South African literature and create sustainable economic opportunities for local writers, illustrators, editors, and creative practitioners across the publishing value chain.

In addition, we aim to publish educational and engaging children’s books designed for homes, schools, libraries, and community spaces. Through this holistic and community-centred approach, we nurture curiosity, build confidence, and cultivate cultural pride in young readers; not only across South Africa, but throughout the African continent and beyond.

Our Publishing Focus

We create children’s books that educate, inspire, and affirm identity while strengthening literacy development across South Africa and beyond.

Specifically, we focus on:

  • Illustrated children’s books rooted in African women’s history for children
  • African history and storytelling for young readers
  • Literacy development and reading culture growth
  • Educational, culturally affirming content for homes and classrooms
  • Women-led and youth-inclusive creative production

Moreover, we develop and produce all our publications in South Africa. By doing so, we actively support local illustrators, editors, designers, printers, and facilitators across the publishing value chain.

As a result, every book we publish not only nurtures young readers but also strengthens South Africa’s creative economy.

Featured Book Project:

Brave, Bright & Brilliant Women : Colour, Learn & Discover African History

Brave, Bright & Brilliant Women is an illustrated children’s book that brings African women’s history for children to life through powerful storytelling and vibrant visuals. The book introduces young readers to influential African women who have shaped history, culture, leadership, scholarship, and social change across the continent.

Through engaging, age-appropriate storytelling, the book makes African history accessible, inspiring, and relevant for today’s generation. As a result, children gain a deeper understanding of the women who helped shape Africa’s past and continue to influence its future.

Historically, many narratives have centred on male achievements, while women’s contributions were sidelined, briefly mentioned, or omitted altogether. Consequently, this imbalance still appears in some school curricula, shaping how children understand African history; and, importantly, who they recognise as leaders and role models.

In response, our work places African women at the centre of historical storytelling. By doing so, the series creates an inclusive and empowering entry point into history. It complements formal education while celebrating matriarchal knowledge systems, women-led leadership traditions, and the enduring legacies African women have shaped across generations.

Whether used in homes, classrooms, or libraries, this book supports literacy development while nurturing identity, confidence, and cultural pride.

Discover how African women’s history for children can inspire the next generation of leaders.

Through engaging storytelling, we introduce audiences to even more African women who have shaped history, culture, leadership, activism, scholarship, and the arts.
